Our sweet boy Percy had been abandoned and left in the Cheshire countryside in the depths of winter for weeks, maybe more by the time us Humans picked him up. He was very thin and scared. It was love at first sight and we were completely committed to giving him the best possible life, to help him recover.

We realised that a coat that hugged his belly stopped him shaking when he heard fire-works and other scary sounds. We just couldn’t find one that fitted right. So we decided to make him some coats to help him feel held and safe.

We bought a second hand sewing machine and began learning how to use it. We came up with the blue-print for our Classic Coat. Everywhere we went, people stopped and asked us where we had bought the coat – the Goodshihtzu seed was ‘sewn’!

It was obvious we were going to need a bit of help from more skilled manufacturers if we were going to grow. Our search for the right place to start was a very long one. We knew we wanted all our coats to be handmade with care, to be as Earth Friendly as possible and for the people who made them to be paid fairly and treated with respect. After searching for many months, in places all over the world, we finally found our little team, based in Bali
We sourced Sustainable Bamboo for the lining and other light-rain repellent eco fabrics to use in our Classic Coat (which we named The Pooch About Town coat, because it’s just a bit fancy, really).
Next came our second product, the Lightweight Raincoat, to compliment our Classic Coat, and after some time, were able to source fabric that was 100% recycled, completely waterproof and made entirely from plastic bottles. Fantastic!
We are excited to see where Goodshihtzu takes us next, but for now, we’re happy to be a little company that stands for something good in a world full of careless, single-use, Fast Fashion. We know that thoughtfully and carefully made items mean so much more. Dogs give us unconditional love and friendship – we think they deserve garments with soul. Thanks for coming along for the ride with us.

Oh and Fun Fact – Percy is not a Shih Tzu (we just assumed he was when we first met him, so there you go.)
